Dean, Philip Merrill College of Journalism

The University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the flagship of the University System of Maryland, the University is located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor nine miles from the heart of the nation's capital. The University ranks among the top 20 public universities, with nationally-ranked programs and innovative undergraduate programs.

The Dean, who reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, is the chief academic officer and executive officer of the college, which has an internationally respected full-time faculty of 28, including more Pulitzer Prize winners than any other journalism school in the country. The faculty consists of both outstanding journalism professionals and highly accomplished scholars. The school also employs about 30 part-time non-tenure track adjunct faculty each semester. The school has 500 undergraduate students and at any given time approximately 75 master's and doctoral students.

Founded in 1947, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism is widely regarded as one of the best journalism schools in the nation. The college is known for its hands-on, professionally oriented undergraduate and master's curriculum. Its Capital News Service, in which graduate and undergraduate students work full-time in news bureaus in Washington and Annapolis, is at the core of the country's leading public affairs reporting program. The program offers sequences in print, broadcast, and online journalism. The college is home to numerous professional programs, including the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, the Journalism Center on Children & Families, the Hubert H. Humphrey Journalism Fellowships Program, a Fulbright-funded, mid-career, academic-year-long program for international journalists, and such prominent affiliate organizations as the National Association of Black Journalists, headquartered at the school. The Dean is President of the American Journalism Review (AJR), a national magazine published six times a year with 25,000 circulation. The Dean also oversees administration of the Maryland Scholastic Press Association, with programs for high school journalism teachers and students. The Merrill College is one of 11 top journalism schools to participate in the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on enhancing education. The college will be moving into a new $30 million building in the spring of 2010.

The Dean is expected to play a major national leadership role in advancing the best standards of journalism. This includes serious engagement with journalism’s regional, national and international organizations. The Dean is expected to provide dynamic leadership to the College and be able to lead the College in achieving recognition as the leading college of journalism.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to achieving excellence in teaching, research, service to the community and profession, strategic planning, dedication to fostering the goals of diversity and affirmative action, success in fund raising and an ability to lead a complex organization. The Dean must demonstrate an understanding of contemporary issues in journalism and journalism education and must possess the ability to anticipate and address future challenges and opportunities. Qualified applicants must merit appointment at the Professor rank and have successful administrative experience. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
